OBAMARace to the Top is a program that President Obama has started to improve schools around the country. The program is giving away $4.35 in federal cash to induce schools to improve their programs.

Cambridge Springs High School has recently participated in this program for a chance to win a chunk of the $4.35 billion dollars. Sixteen seniors were pulled out of their classes for two days to create a video to submit for the Race to the Top program. The video was created to show President Obama that our school deserves a portion of the money that is being given away. The video incorporated positive facts and accomplishments achieved by Cambridge Springs High School in the past several years. Six of the sixteen seniors worked on essays with the senior English teacher, Mr. Molnar, to submit as well.  “These essays were a written supplement to the two minute video to fulfill the requirements for the Race to the Top. There were four questions, six kids, and it took eight hours to complete these essays,” stated Mr. Molnar.

The video and the essays  have been submitted to the Race to the Top committee and everyone here at Cambridge Springs High School hopes that we will be chosen as the top video. Not only would our school receive the grant money but we would also have President Obama speak at our 2010 graduation on June tenth.

Mrs. Mumford and Mr. Thayer, the government teacher from Conneaut Lake have teamed together for a new project that was designed to challenge the senior government classes in the real world of politics.

This new competition has broken Cambridge Springs seniors government classes into 6 parties who will compete against each other to elect the new President of the United States, of course this mock election material will be sent to our neighbors at Conneaut Lake where they will vote for our new president based on our platform work, fliers, commercials, website, and radio podcasts that we will put together to try to convince the unbiased teams to elect our party as supreme.

Simultaneously we will receive Conneaut Lake’s party’s materials and vote for their new President. The two schools have set up guidelines for this competition, including creating a party platform. The platform touches base on seven vital topics that need to be discussed in American Politics.

The most important include voicing and supporting your beliefs on gay rights, stem cell research, the war in Iraq, and the failing education policies. The six Cambridge Springs Parties are competing against each other; one team, The Reformation Party is working to elect Sonny P for President and Jordan S. for vice president.

Mrs. Beltz leads the cast in a vocal practice

Mrs. Beltz leads the cast in a vocal practice

This year at CSHS the drama club is performing their production of the enchanting fairytale “Cinderella”. The club began work on blocking and singing practice at the beginning of March in preparation for the performances which will occur on April 8th and 9th.

This year’s portrayal of Cinderella is a modern spin  on the classic story. The character’s personalities have been morphed to appeal to a more modern time period and new age audience. Cinderella, originally a “girly” dreamer, is now a “bookworm” with such terrible vision that she needs very strong glasses to even see straight.  The prince follows along these same lines of character traits which leads him to fall for his perfect match, Cinderella. In fact, the twist of fate that brings them together is the fact that they share the same strength glasses. Also, Cinderella’s animal friends, who in the original Cinderella are furry woodland creatures, are now a toad, a spider, and a crow. These animals, like their famous name-sakes, are philosophers who just want the best for Cinderella.

This year’s cast is composed of eleven main characters ; S. Wolfram as Cinderella, S. Tepe as Prince Freddy, M. Noble as Brunhilda the Evil Stepmother, K. Moyer and R. Snyder as Evil Stepsisters Clarissa and Priscilla, T. Lobdell as King Frederick, A. Brink as Gaston the King’s trusty servant, F. McCabe as Plato the Toad, K. Payer as Aristotle the Crow, A. Hahn as Socrates the Spider, and A. Skelton as Gwendolyn the Well Wisher.

youthartmonthIMG_0222The art classrooms are always full of interesting activities and people. The rest of the school is able to see the efforts of the art classes as they walk in the hallway from class to class. This doesn’t seem fair to the rest of the world, however, because they deserve the opportunity to see the wonderful creations that the artists of Cambridge Springs work so diligently on perfecting. Therefore, Mr. Wanker and Mr. Corle have arranged for some art work, done by the students here at the Spa, to be on display at the Millcreek Mall. The Millcreek Mall in Erie is frequented by many of the attendees of Cambridge Springs and is an ideal spot for such a display.youthartmonthIMG_0223

March is Youth Art Month so every year the Millcreek Mall encourages teachers to have their students submit their artwork for a display. This display will be up until March 24. Each art teacher is allowed to submit ten pieces created by students ranging in grades k-12. Prizes are given to students for their artwork based on their age group. This is a wonderful opportunity for the young artists of Cambridge Springs and several students are participating in this contest. Their artwork will only be on display for two weeks,  so you have until March 24 to see it! Good luck to all the participants!

At 3 A.M. on March 19th, 42 students and 14 teacher and parent chaperones sleepily departed for a 24 hour adventure – a trip to Washington, D.C.! The trip was first offered to History Day students and then opened up to the rest of the school. Mr. Werkmeister, advisor to the History Day club here at CSHS and 10th grade history teacher, organizes this worthwhile event. He has been taking students to D.C. for four years now and would like to continue offering the trip in future years. The planning begins in December, when the History Day club decides if they’d like to offer the trip. Mr. Werkmeister then begins planning the trip in early January.

allisondc2Students who decided to embark on this tiring journey certainly faced a full day ahead. The bus left the school at 3 am and didn’t reach the city until about 10; though there was a stop for a buffet breakfast on the way. The students were then split into four groups of 10 to 11 students where they spent their morning touring two museums of their choice, ranging from the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of American History, the Museum of the American Indian, and the National Archives. After seeing artifacts of our nation’s history, students boarded the bus once again for a short trip over to Union Station, a famous train station where you can find almost any type of food you’re craving, whether it’s Chinese, Mexican, or a hamburger. Students then toured the city of D.C., making stops at the FDR memorial, the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean memorials, and Arlington National Cemetery to see the Kennedy graves and the Changing of the Guard. After this tour, students then boarded the bus to go home, stopping for a fast food dinner along the way and then returning back to Cambridge Springs, more tired than ever, at about 2 am.

allisondc3Several History Day students were on the trip and enjoyed being able to relate their trip to D.C. to their project. L. Lobdell was one of those students. “It was really cool that I got to see a display about my History Day project at the Museum of American History,” she said.

allisondc4R. Peters, a freshman at CSHS and also a History Day student, also found the trip to be a great experience. “[I enjoyed] seeing the buildings and how beautiful and elegant the architecture of the city is and how many trees it has. My favorite part was in the Museum of American History, we saw the new Star Spangled Banner exhibit that houses the huge banner from the War of 1812 and all the history behind it.”

Ms. Thompson, also an advisor to the History Day club and an 8th grade history teacher at CSHS, attended the trip as well. When asked what her favorite part of the trip was, she responded, “I have a different favorite every year – depending on what museums we see, but I always enjoy the tour mobile survey of the monuments.  The tour guides are so knowledgeable – and usually pretty entertaining too. My highlights this year were having my daughter Anna on the trip and also I really enjoyed the Museum of the American Indian because I have always been interested in Native American history.  They had amazing artifacts there, great gift shops, and a café with Native American foods from different regions.” If Ms. Thompson could change anything about the trip, it would be, “I would install Laz-E-Boy recliners on the bus- sleeping in those bus seats is just not very restful.”

allisondc1The highlight of the trip for Mr. Werkmeister was simply seeing how the trip affected the students. “My highlight is getting the students who don’t travel much to come. It’s nice to see students who found the experience to be great. It’s neat to see kids eating lunch at the cafeteria one day and Union Station the next.” Mr. Werkmeister says he wishes he could make the trip longer, “but there is the issue of expenses.”

The 2010 CSHS Blue Devils' Baseball season is just around the corner.

The 2010 CSHS Blue Devils' Baseball season is just around the corner.

Spring brings green grass, fresh air, and the sound of the aluminum bats gracing the high school diamond as the Cambridge Springs Blue Devils baseball team takes the field.  This year’s Blue Devils’ roster returns many of last year’s top players as it boasts six seniors: N. Sebastian, S. Pechin, D. Bausch, D. Shearer, D. Watkins, and J. Oosterkamp.

The team opens the regular season at home against Saegertown on March 31 with first pitch scheduled for 4:00p.m.  But before that game, the team must find a way to fix their weaknesses; in particular, their pitching.

“Our pitching depth is a weakness,” said N. Sebastian.  S. Pechin, one of the team’s pitchers, gave a different perspective on the pitching situation.

“We use a variety of pitchers throughout the game,” said Pechin.  “We pitch by committee.”

With the Blue Devils using a variety of pitchers, the depth on the mound appears strong.  Along with pitching, Pechin is confident about the team’s ability to hit.

“Our main strength is batting,” he added.  One such reason Pechin can remain confident is because the team returns designated-hitter D. Watkins, a 1st-team All-Region 2 player at that position.  D. Bausch is another returning All-Region honoree as he was given an honorable mention award last year.

So what are some of the team’s goals for the upcoming season?  According to Pechin, the team’s goals are what most squads strive for: post-season success.

“Districts and playoffs are always a goal,” he said.  “We also want to be competitive in the Region.”

Coach Paul Frazier shares the same sentiments as Pechin.  To get there, however, Frazier notes that the basics must be in place.  When asked what steps will he take to ensure a winning season this year for the Spa, Frazier replied, “making sure we do the little things right in practice.”

Joining the well-known rivalry Cambridge Springs has with Saegertown, the Blue Devils are starting to butt heads with some other local schools, specifically Union City and Conneaut Lake.  Pechin said that the Spa gets into “dog fights” with these teams.

“Every game’s a tough game,” he said.  “We have an unspoken rivalry with these teams.”

Cambridge Springs hosts the Bears on April 30 and the Indians on May 4; both start times are 4:00p.m. at Baird Field.

With the snow melting and the open-gyms ending, it is certain that home runs are on the horizon.

go greenIn 2010, almost everyone is supporting the idea of going green.  While some solutions for making a better environment involve lots of money, some ideas can save hundreds of dollars. Try these tips to better the earth, and save money while you’re at it.

-Use both sides of your plain paper, and recycle. Paper is the biggest form of waste that comes from schools. Every ton, or 220,000 sheets, of paper that is recycled saves approximately 17 trees. The average school tosses 38 tons of paper per year, or more than 8 million sheets!

-If you’re planning on buying a new computer, instead of purchasing a desktop consider getting a laptop or notebook. Laptops require less materials and energy to produce than desktops and use a fraction of the electricity to run. If you choose a laptop over a desktop, you’ll save an average of $20 on your annual electricity bill.

-Instead of buying a disposable plastic bottle of water every time you go to the gym, consider bringing your own reusable water bottle filled with filtered water from home. You could save an average of $200 per year, as well as 14 pounds of plastic. If one in 20 gym members who generally buy a bottle of water before each workout brought a reusable water bottle from home, the total plastic saved annually would total nearly 29 million pounds, a weight that would take 200,000 people each bench-pressing 150 pounds.

J. Burdick, a junior here at Cambridge Springs High School and an attendee of District Chorus and Region Chorus is advancing to the State Chorus Festival this year in Pittsburgh.  After placing 3rd in Regional Chorus (March 10th-13th) at Seneca High School, Jenn will prepare for one of the largest musical events in the state.  “It was a blast,” said Burdick, when asked about some of her experience.  The auditions happened right away on the first day and all contestants were given two pieces of music that they had rehearsed prior to the event to sight-read (singing without accompnyment).  two of the four days were 13 hour days, starting at 8 in the morning and ending at 9 at night.  However, when Jenn wasn’t singing, she spent her evening with a host family that was located at Seneca.  She also stayed with “one other girl who was from Limestone (Clarion).  My host family also had a foreign exchange student from mexico, so we all would just stay up all night just talking and hanging out,” Burdick added.  There were also two concerts to conclude the festival, one on the Friday night for just the host families that took care of all of the students that lived too far away to commute, and a second on that Saturday that was open to everyone that wanted to attend.  When asked how she will prepare for the State Festival, Jenn stated that she would “practice, practice, practice!”  The musical pieces are expected to be much harder, and perfection will most likely be necessary.  Underclassmen, grades 10 and 11 will also have the chance to audition for the All-East Choral Festival, which will take place next year in Maryland.  The State Chorus festival will take place in Pittsburgh in the month of May.

Recently a Corry school board member’s wife was accused of posting racist comments on her Facebook and blogspot.com page. After talking to the woman’s husband, he claimed it was not her, but someone who hacked into her Facebook and wrote the ignorant comments.

Hacking into an email, Facebook, Myspace, etc can be easy or hard depending on your knowledge of computers and the person you are trying to hack. There are various ways you can throw off hackers and make it harder for them to get into your personal information.

The first way is to create the password that is completely irrelevant to your social life. For example, your significant others name and favorite number won’t be too hard to guess. The best passwords make use of numbers, capital letters, and unique characters (#,$,%,^) and are generally about 8 characters long.

The second way to throw a hacker off is to make sure that your secret question (i.e. Your moms maiden name) is not really what the question is asking. Use this question as an opportunity for a second password. So if it’s asking for your favorite pet consider typing in a random object and some numbers instead.

Lastly, if you do need to reset your password, it is sometime sent to your email so make sure your email password if different from your other accounts so the hacker can’t take over all your account in one blow.

Although we don’t know what really happened with the school board teacher’s wife and her Facebook, there’s a possibility that her password may have been an easy guess for an experienced hacker.
