Chocolate dominates Valentine’s Day more than any other holiday celebrated throughout the year. In fact, according to www.census.gov Americans consumed 24 lbs. of candy per capita in 2001 and a large portion of this is consumed around Valentine’s Day. “Chocolate makes us wicked, guilty, sinful, healthy, chic, happy,” Elaine Sherman wrote in a poetic composition. Maybe, Sherman had it right, and the way chocolate makes people feel is the reason for the persistent obsession with the delectable cocoa taste. Whatever the reason, during the February festivities surrounding Valentine’s Day it is important to remember the health benefits and disadvantages to eating ample amounts of chocolate.chocolate

Interesting studies on the effects of chocolate have been conducted over the years. One such study has shown that dark chocolate helps rather than hinders the heart. Dark chocolate improves blood flow and reduces blood pressure which aids the cardiovascular system. A study done by Yale University Associate Professor Dr. David Katz illustrates that the health benefits of eating dark chocolate are impressive. Dr. Katz tested the blood pressure of 45 adults before and after eating dark chocolate. He discovered that just two hours after consuming the dark chocolate, “The subjects’ blood pressure dropped and their blood flow improved.” (www.allchocolate.com) This is good news for all who celebrate Valentine’s Day with the luscious taste of chocolate.

heartIt is advisable to be wary of the not-so-healthy effects of chocolate as well though. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “Chocolate’s high content of stearic acid puts it in the same category of risk of coronary disease as meat and butter.” (www.medicationsense.com) Stearic acid is a saturated fat and due to the high concentration of saturated fat in chocolate, chocolate has the potential to increase the risk of coronary artery disease. Other side effects of eating large amounts of chocolate include weight gain. So stay in shape this Valentine’s Day while eating healthy amounts of dark chocolate.BOSU_Ball_3
