Recently a Corry school board member’s wife was accused of posting racist comments on her Facebook and blogspot.com page. After talking to the woman’s husband, he claimed it was not her, but someone who hacked into her Facebook and wrote the ignorant comments.

Hacking into an email, Facebook, Myspace, etc can be easy or hard depending on your knowledge of computers and the person you are trying to hack. There are various ways you can throw off hackers and make it harder for them to get into your personal information.

The first way is to create the password that is completely irrelevant to your social life. For example, your significant others name and favorite number won’t be too hard to guess. The best passwords make use of numbers, capital letters, and unique characters (#,$,%,^) and are generally about 8 characters long.

The second way to throw a hacker off is to make sure that your secret question (i.e. Your moms maiden name) is not really what the question is asking. Use this question as an opportunity for a second password. So if it’s asking for your favorite pet consider typing in a random object and some numbers instead.

Lastly, if you do need to reset your password, it is sometime sent to your email so make sure your email password if different from your other accounts so the hacker can’t take over all your account in one blow.

Although we don’t know what really happened with the school board teacher’s wife and her Facebook, there’s a possibility that her password may have been an easy guess for an experienced hacker.

Frodo’s Not The Only One With Ring Problems…

Microsoft’s hit console, the Xbox 360, has one major flaw: The Red Ring of Death. The Ring occurs when the emerald halo of lights surrounding the power button turns red. This is meant to tell the user that the system has internal problems.  The problems are mostly attributed to the futuristic, concave design that allows the system to overheat quickly and sustain permanent damage. But how does one go about fixing this accidental design flaw? Before contacting expensive repair companies, try to see if you can fix the problem first.

If you do find yourself with the Red Ring of Death looming ominously on your 360 and the multi-lingual warning on your TV screen, don’t panic. Take time to think  about what the problem could be instead of just cracking it open (opening the console will void your warranty). These are the more common ailment causers for the Xbox 360:

  • the system is made with brittle, lead-free solder
  • excessive heat
  • the clamp for the heat sink causes the motherboard to flex
  • soldering temperature was too low during manufacturing

Probably the best way to combat the Red Ring is working to prevent it. Be sure to keep your 360 off the carpet and stand it on its hard drive. Dirt and other vent clogging agents are hiding in your carpet just waiting to stop the system’s airflow. Make sure all of the Xbox’s vents are clear of  obstructions by cleaning it once in a while. Most importantly, remember to turn it off and let it rest after marathon gaming sessions.

Beware of home made remedies such as ‘The Towel Trick’- these are only for the most daring of techies. If you attempt these tricks, you risk voiding your warranty, damaging the console further, and/or setting your house on fire.

Hopefully these tips can help you save your beloved  Xbox 360 from the Red Ring of Death. If your 360 does happen to bite the dust, then another thing you can do is buy a newer model like the Elite.
