Peace!

December 1st, 2010  |  Published in News

A big congratulations to Savannah H.- sixth grade student at Maplewood Elementary- who won first place in the regions Peace Poetry contest.

PEACE

Peace is not war

But peace is at our core

Peace is not meth

But we smoke it to our death

Peace is not rage

You should lock it in its cage

Peace is not pain

Through it we shall never gain

Peace is when we were seven

Peace is heaven

The Stock Market Game: First and Fifth

April 14th, 2010  |  Published in News

Once again, the dynamic duo of Haylett and Brooks were first out of 25 teams in the Stock Market Game. They made their choices in early February and began the game in last place. However, due to their investing genius, they pulled ahead of everyone to win the game. They turned their $100,000 into almost $112,000 in just over two months. They averaged a 7.5% rate of return. Their big winners were CVS, Disney, Nike, and PNC- all double digit gains.

Elementary Summer Enrichment Opportunity

March 17th, 2010  |  Published in News

Students currently in grades 2,3,4,5 and 6 are invited to attend the 2010 MASTERS Summer Program at Edinboro University. This program is sponsored by the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit and takes place from 8:20 AM to 3:00 PM June 21 through June 25. The MASTERS (Multifaceted Advanced Summer Training for Excelling Rural Students) Program is a five day, high level, intensive science and math laboratory experience. High ability, motivation, a serious attitude and a favorable teacher recommendation are necessary. The tuition cost is $200 and does not include transportation or lunch. There are also a limited number of scholarships available for students with a financial need.  This year’s classes include “Taking Flight,” “Engineering for Efficiency,” “Healthy Habits,” “Squid to Seeds,” and “3-2-1 Blast off!”. In the past, several PENNCREST students  attended the program and are enthusiastic supports of the education and fun it provided. For more information, contact Mrs. Mumford at Maplewood and Saegertown or Mr. Harakal at Cambridge. Applications are due by April 23, 2010.

Go PENNCREST!

March 8th, 2010  |  Published in News

Students in grades six through 12 recently attended the World and Current Events Academic Game at Slippery Rock University. This  year’s game had questions about World War II as well as important events from 2009. There were several hundred students from area district competing. PENNCREST had a winning team as well as an undefeated player. N. McGowan from SHS was undefeated. He was also part of a winning team. Two of the other players on the winning team were D. Smith and Z. Eimer from Maplewood. Way to go guys!!!!

Currently, Saegertown Elementary is leading in the Stock Market Game. A fifth grade team is in first place. Team mates B. Haylett and T. Brooks are holding on to first place. In third place is the sixth grade team of G. Johnston, J. McClymonds, and J. Shaffer. The Stock Market Game is updated weekly. There are currently 17 teams competing. Way to go guys!!!! Let’s hang on to that lead.

Update: Brooks and Haylett are still holding on to first place. However, Johnston, McClymonds and Shaffer have move down to fourth place. These young investors are doing an excellent job.
