Dear SES Community,

The 2010-2011 school year is quickly approaching, and I wanted to inform you of several of the exciting changes that are in store for everyone during the new year.  New faces, new classrooms, and new technology will help to make this year one of the most successful school years.

This year we have added new faculty members, but we have also lost one individual who will be missed very much.  Mrs. Chodubski has accepted a job from the Harborcreek School District as principal of the area’s middle school.  Mrs. Chodubski will be greatly missed, but we will all remember her and wish her the best.  The new faculty members, at 2nd grade is Mr. Simmons,  in the 6th grade writing classroom is Mrs. Marshall and Mrs. Schlosser will be in 4th Grade.  Mrs. Walsh is our new art teacher.  Along with these new teachers there have also been teacher transfers from schools within the PENNCREST School District.  Mr. Marvin will be leaving his position as a health and physical education teacher to teach health at the elementary level as a rotating teacher who will move throughout Saegertown, Cambridge Springs, and Maplewood.  Another faculty member moved from Maplewood Elementary School to join our S.E.S. team.  Ms. Smith has moved from the Maplewood area to teach 6th grade, science.  Another very exciting move involves our guidance counselor.  Mr. Shields will be moving from Cambridge Springs Elementary School as a classroom teacher to become our school’s guidance counselor.  Along with these district moves, we also have teachers within our walls that have changed teaching assignments to grow professionally for the new year.  Mr. Levis has moved from 3rd grade to 6th grade, and Mrs. Stewart is moving from 6th grade to Learning Support and Mrs. Maxeiner will be leaving the 6th grade wing to teach classes to 4th grade students.  Also, Mr. Case has moved from a 4th grade teacher to a kindergarten teacher.  Lastly, Ms. McGowan will be leaving her 4th grade classroom to become a Reading Recovery teacher.   All of the new moves will help contribute to student achievement.

Another change for the upcoming school year is the location of teacher’s classrooms.  Throughout the summer, the maintenance staff has been working steadily to move many of the classrooms and to get the classrooms sparkling for the start of the year.  Another interesting move that we are all looking forward to is the 6th grade schedule.  This year, the 6th grade classrooms will be departmentalized (Math, Science, Writing and Social Studies), and this change will allow there to be added movement and transition throughout the day for students in 6th grade to enhance student achievement.

Lastly, students should look forward to new technology being in many of our classrooms.  We have been working hard to install new SMARTBOARDS, flat screen televisions, and there is even a new face in the technology department.  Students will experience a fifth special, this will be enhanced with the already existing, library, art, music, and physical education.  They will have the opportunity to start the year out with Health for twelve weeks and then move to 24 weeks of technology class with Joy Bon and Nate Horstman.  In a world that is quickly advancing, technology is a subject that should be integrated and appreciated by all of our students.  Throughout the course of this year, there will be many opportunities for students to work hands on with technology and for teachers to share their lessons through the use of technology.

I hope that these changes will help add excitement to the new school year.  Please feel free to e-mail me at jlyon@penncrest.org or stop here at the school to see me personally if you have any questions or concerns.  I know that your commitment of our wonderful staff and the support that all of you as parents provide will help to make this a very successful year.  Have a wonderful summer break, and I look forward to seeing the students September 1st ready for another great year.

Sincerely,

Julie Lyon, Saegertown Elementary School Principal
