All of us at SHS would just like to 2406616790_1a39e7a09ccongratulate a few of our outstanding young students that well represented our school this past weekend – March 6th.  Sean B. and Tim C. will be heading east to the State wrestling tournament.  There will be a send off for these young men on Wednesday during school.  Also, the district matches for swimming concluded this past Saturday.  Mike P. and Samantha H. finished their season this weekend by competing in this District 10 event.  Last but certainly not least, the SHS Key club took third place in Hersey as a group for community fundraising.  Representing the key club were Lindsay B., Gabby B., and Olivia F.

Everyone at the school is so proud of the accomplishments of these students.  Earlier in the year we adopted a saying “Committment to Excellence”.  These students demonstrated that and  more.  Way to go Panthers!!!

NHS students bring smiles and Seuss to SES

“One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish,” is a famous quote from the popular children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel. That’s right, Dr. Seuss. On Tuesday March 2, America celebrated the 106th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birthday with Read Across America Day, and Saegertown High School’s National Honor Society students got the opportunity to bring Dr. Seuss into the elementary school. The high school students all had the opportunity to read a children’s story to a class. “I liked how well the kids responded and paid attention. It’s a really great a idea to try to excite kids to read more,” said NHS senior Emily J. “I could not believe how excited the kids were to see me read to them,” said junior Kurtis H. It was an electric atmosphere, and the entire NHS staff was energetic, along with all the elementary students and staff. Junior Sean R. said, “It was a rewarding experience for everyone, and hopefully Read Across America day continues.”

“I so don’t do mysteries” by Barrie Summy, “Tentacles” by Roland Smith, “Wolves of the Beyond: Lone Wolf” by Kathryn Lasky, “Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox” by Eoin Colfer, “Zoobreak” by Gordon Korman. These are just a few of the new titles available in the SHS library as a result of the Scholastic Book Fair which was held Feb. 8-12. A wide variety of products were offered to students, faculty, and parents visiting for conferences during the week. With the money that was raised from the fair, the library received almost $500 in free books to stock the shelves. “The turnout was about normal,” said librarian Mrs. Litke. “Thanks to everybody for another successful book fair.”

Animals Have Invaded the Auditorium

February 25th, 2010 by dwilson | Comments Off | Filed in Happenings @ SHS

The Zoomobile came to SHS on Feb. 25th.   The Pittsburgh Zoo brought animals to the Saegertown auditorium as part of the Zoomobile Interactive outreach program. Students in grades six through eight spent time with the animals, that included several different reptiles.   Mrs. DeVoge, seventh grade science teacher, said that she thinks this will be beneficial for students because it will give them a chance to experience biodiversity. Mrs. DeVoge arranged this educational opportunity for the students after receiving the literature about it in the mail. The event is being sponsored by PPG Industries, thanks to Mrs. Heather Johnston (in the library) and her husband Mr. Kevin Johnston, a PPG employee.
