Freak the Mighty Book Review
This book is called Freak the Mighty. It was written by Rodman Philbrick. It is published by Scholastic Inc. The first published copy was in hardcover by Blue Sky Press in 1993. This is a 179 page book.
Freak the Mighty takes place in small part of a large city. It was sort of the middle to lower class neighborhood. Max lived with his grandparents and Kevin with his mother. They lived next-door to each other. The story could have taken place in the late 1980s to early 1990s.
The Protagonists would be Max and Kevin (Freak). Max is really big and everyone thought he was stupid. Freak was really small and super smart.
When Kevin moves in they soon become friends. Freak decides they should be called Freak the Mighty because together they were big, strong, and smart.
The Antagonist is Max’s dad. He is big too. He has anger management issues. He killed Max’s mom and tried to kill Max. When he got out of jail the first time he came and kidnapped Max, now he is back in jail.
First thing that happens in the story is Freak moving in and, after trying to beat up Max with his crutches, they become friends. Max’s dad gets out of jail and kidnaps Max, taking him to an abandoned apartment. Just as he is trying to kill Max, Freak comes to the rescue. The police come and take his dad back to jail. Then Freak dies in the hospital because his body was too small for his heart and brain.
I like this story and give it a “thumbs up” because these are things that can and do happen in real life. Also because it is very well written and I like the author.
Bloomability Book Review
Bloomability was a very intriguing book. It went through a young girls life, that was having a hard time. When Dinnie Doone moved to Switzerland with her aunt and uncle her life started to transform. Dinnie started a new school, where she met new friends, Lila, and she also found out how to love. She was really good friends with a boy named Gunthrie, and by the middle of the book she starts to fall in love with him. In the end she finds out how to live, laugh, and love in a whole new prespective. I thought this book was very good, and heartfelt. I feel this way about the book because I would feel the same way as Dinnie if I was going through the struggles she was going through. I don’t think this book could be changed in anyway, I liked it just as it is. The thing that I liked the best from Bloomability would be would be the way it described Switzerland, and how the people felt. The thing I liked the least was that Dinnie had a bad life before she moved to Switzerland. I recommend this book to anyone, and everyone because it’s a happy book to read. I would read more books by this author, because she’s very exact when she describes the characters in the book. The moral of this story would be to live life and hold no grudges against anyone.
Call of the Wild Book Review
Call of the Wild is an extraordinary book by Jack London. In this book, you follow a dog named Buck. Buck has a good life with his owner, Judge Miller, and lives in Santa Clara Valley, California. But one day, when no one is home, the gardener kidnaps Buck and he is sold again and again across the United States and Canada, all the way to a Klondike region of Canada, where a gold rush is going on. Buck is forced to pull sleds with other dogs, and finds that it is a dog-eat-dog world, literally, and that the only way to survive is to get to the top. But many obstacles get in his way, including a dog named Spitz. Buck’s primal instincts come back to him, changing his personality along the way. Jack London does a great job of showing how different your personality can change depending on the situation. I find that this is a very important thing to know and that he shows it very well. This book really made me think, probably due to all of the intense scenes in this book. If you like dogs, action, or Jack London, I definitely recommend this intense book.
