Groundwater pollution research/presentation rubric
Objective: Research a case of groundwater pollution to create a case study.
Outcome: Create a Powerpoint presentation on the case study that will be viewed by me not presented.
Must discuss
1. Pollutant
2. Harmful effects of the pollutant
a. On people
b. On the land
3. Situation that created the pollutant
a. Principal responsible parties
b. What type of organization created the situation
4. People affected
a. Is it a superfund site?
b. Is, and how is the government involved
5. Extent of the groundwater region affected
6. Was the pollution preventable?
7. What is being done for cleanup
a. When will the land be able to be reused
b. How will it be reused
Guidelines
1. Any site can be used so long as the groundwater was negatively impacted in some way shape or form.
2. You will have two full days in the library. That leaves one full day for research and one full day to work on whatever form of presentation you would like to do. (I recommend Powerpoint)
3. You must have at least 15 slides in your Powerpoint. Refer to what must be discussed to assist you.
4. You MUST tell me what site you are doing as soon as you make a decision so that I can record it and make sure no one else attempts to use the same site.
Hints
1. Use search terms such as “groundwater pollution”, “aquifer polluted”, “groundwater superfund sites”, etc.
2. If you have not found a suitable case study midway through the 1st day you may need to see me for assistance.
3. http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/npl/npl.htm Search for superfund sites by state. Make sure the superfund site has some form of groundwater contamination.
